Celebrating 10 years of commitment, expertise, and community support and why your help still matters.

Ten years by our side
Ten years is a long time in the life of a growing charity and an even longer time to give your heart and energy to a cause. This year we celebrate Julia Watts’ tenth anniversary at Autism Guernsey, marking a decade of steadfast service, professional excellence, and quiet leadership that has touched hundreds of autistic people and their families across the Bailiwick.
Julia joined us at a time when autism support locally was still finding its feet. From those early days of setting up systems and building trust, she has been a constant: the calm on the end of the phone, the advocate in the room, and the organiser who makes sure help arrives when and where it’s needed.
"Julia has provided me with unwavering support during the past 7 years since I received my diagnosis (age 33). I was not prepared for the enormity of what an ASD diagnosis would mean for me: it has redefined my understanding of myself, my relationships with family and friends, my employment, my health … the way I judged my past, and how I can shape my future. Julia helped me through all the ups and downs of that journey with endless patience, empathy and skill. She takes the time and care to truly understand the person behind the diagnosis and give them, perhaps for the first time, a voice."
"Julia has helped many adults on a similar journey to me. Beyond supporting us as individuals Julia works tirelessly to raise awareness, improve accessibility and drive change in other services, and in the community. Her tenacity is rare. We will forever be indebted to her vision, dedication and care."

Commitment you can feel
Ask anyone who has worked with Julia and they’ll tell you the same thing: she shows up. Whether it’s a timely call to a parent navigating a new diagnosis, a practical strategy for a professional looking to better support a client, or a patient conversation with an anxious person, Julia brings a rare blend of warmth and know‑how.
Her approach is grounded in evidence‑based practice and person‑centred support. She champions reasonable adjustments, sensory‑friendly spaces, and clear communication, all the simple things that make a profound difference when done consistently. It’s this combination of empathy and expertise that has earned Julia the trust of the community, and our team, time and again.
How Autism Guernsey has evolved
Autism Guernsey itself has changed significantly over the past decade. What began as a small, determined group is now a confident, community‑rooted charity offering a broader range of services and partnerships. Along the way we’ve:
Expanded support pathways from early‑stage information and signposting through to tailored guidance for education, employment, and independent living.
Invested in training helping local organisations, schools, and employers understand autism and create more inclusive environments.
Built peer and family networks because practical support is powerful, and so is the knowledge that you’re not alone.
Strengthened advocacy ensuring autistic voices are heard in decision‑making and service design across the island.
These changes didn’t happen overnight. They came from years of listening to lived experience, testing what works, and committing to do better, all areas where Julia has been instrumental.
Real lives, real impact
The difference this makes shows up in small, everyday wins as much as in the big milestones:
A child who can now attend a full school day because the right adjustments were put in place.
A young adult accessing work experience with confidence, thanks to an employer who understands sensory needs.
A parent who finally feels heard and supported, rather than overwhelmed and alone.
Julia’s fingerprints are on countless stories like these often behind the scenes, never seeking the spotlight, always focused on the person in front of her.
"I first met Julia in 2015, shortly after receiving my [very late] Autism diagnosis. Over the past ten years I have seen and experienced Julia's unwavering dedication to Autism Guernsey, the individuals the charity supports, and her team of staff and volunteers. She is always ready and willing to listen to the voices of those impacted by Autism, and wherever possible provide support, resources, and advice - and all with a non judgemental kindness, empathy, understanding and professionalism. As a result of the support I've received from Julia, both as a client and volunteer, I have had opportunities I would otherwise never have had. I have been grateful for and benefited from her advocacy and interventions in situations that were particularly challenging for me (e.g. medical, employment related and navigating other services). Julia's commitment to Autism Guernsey and those the charity supports is truly exceptional."

Why ongoing funding matters
While we’re proud of how far we’ve come, the need is still growing. Autism is not a niche issue; it is a community reality. Demand for guidance, training, and practical support continues to rise and sustainable funding is what allows us to respond quickly and effectively.
Funding powers the essentials
Direct support, timely advice, one‑to‑one guidance, and crisis prevention.
Training and awareness, equipping teachers, employers, and frontline staff with practical tools.
Resources and coordination, the behind‑the‑scenes work that makes everything run smoothly, from safeguarding to volunteer management.
Every donation, grant, and corporate partnership helps us plan ahead, retain skilled staff like Julia, and keep support accessible when families need it most.
